The Story

My name is Lena Bishop, and I carry OC pepper spray because I work late and walk home through the city most nights. I’m not reckless; I’m prepared. But preparedness doesn’t mean invincible, and I learned that the hard way this past fall after a widely reported late-night parking garage confrontation downtown. I wasn’t in that incident—but a week later, I found myself in a situation close enough to feel uncomfortably familiar.

The night it worked, it worked exactly as advertised. I was crossing the garage when footsteps closed in fast. A man started shouting—angry, erratic, too close. My heart spiked, but training kicked in. I planted my feet, extended my arm, and gave a short burst aimed at his eyes. The effect was immediate. He recoiled, coughing and swearing, hands clawing at his face. The distance gave me precious seconds to move away and reach a lit area where a security guard was posted. OC spray did its job: it disrupted and disoriented, and it allowed me to escape.

Two weeks later, I learned when it doesn’t.

Different night. Colder. Wind whipping between buildings. Another confrontation—this one quieter, more predatory. When I deployed the spray, the gust pushed part of the cloud back at me. My eyes burned. I blinked through tears. The man flinched but didn’t stop. Whether he was intoxicated, adrenalized, or just determined, I don’t know. What I do know is that OC isn’t a magic off switch. It’s a tool, and tools have limits.

I backed away quickly, speaking loudly, creating space, and keeping obstacles between us. He hesitated—long enough for a car to pull in and headlights to flood the lane. He turned and left.

Since then, I still carry OC. I also carry humility about what it can and can’t do. It works best with distance, good aim, and favorable conditions. It works best as part of a plan, not the plan itself. Awareness, movement, light, and witnesses matter just as much. I walk with my head up now, my route planned, my exits noted. OC spray is there to give me a chance—not a guarantee—and I respect it for precisely that.
