A violent stabbing spree at a Michigan Walmart left 11 injured but alive thanks to the quick action of an armed bystander.
The accused attacker, Bradford James Gille, now sits in psychiatric custody after being ruled incompetent to stand trial.
As the investigation continues, the community watches closely for the following legal and medical developments.

The Story

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Authorities say the man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Walmart near Traverse City remains in state psychiatric custody after being ruled incompetent to stand trial.

Bradford James Gille, 42, is charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder in the July 26 attack at the Garfield Township store. Investigators say Gille used a folding knife to wound shoppers and a store employee in what officials have described as a random, fast-moving assault.

All 11 victims survived. A Marine veteran and concealed pistol license holder confronted Gille at gunpoint in the parking lot, helping restrain him until deputies arrived. Officials credit the bystander intervention with preventing more injuries.

A judge found Gille incompetent on Aug. 22 and ordered him to the state Center for Forensic Psychiatry for treatment. Court proceedings are on hold until doctors determine he can participate in his defense.

Authorities say no clear motive has been identified. Local officials and community groups continue to support victims as the investigation and psychiatric evaluation continue.

The Lesson:- Practical, Direct & Tactical

Attention CPL holders: Third-party intervention is one of the most legally and tactically complex situations you will ever face. Treat it with the seriousness it deserves.

Michigan’s self-defense law applies to others the same as it does to you.
You must have a reasonable belief that a person is facing:

  • Death

  • Great bodily harm

  • Sexual assault

If the situation is ambiguous, do not engage. You cannot “shoot to investigate.”

Threat Identification

Most civilian shootings go wrong because the defender misidentifies:

  • Who is the real aggressor?

  • Whether the aggressor is still a threat

  • Whether deadly force is still justified

If you can’t clearly articulate the threat, you’re not justified in acting.

Engagement Priorities

  1. Call 911 early.

  2. Move people out of danger.

  3. Use cover.

  4. If you intervene, it must be to stop a lethal threat, not to apprehend.

  5. Do not pursue fleeing suspects — that is a law enforcement function.

Firearm Presentation

  • Verbal commands first, whenever safe.

  • Keep a stable position with a known backdrop.

  • Cease action immediately when the threat stops.

  • Holster or place the firearm down before police arrival if the scene has stabilized.

Post-Incident

You will be detained until officers determine what happened.
Provide the basics:

  • “I was in fear for their life.”

  • “The suspect had a weapon.”

  • “I will cooperate fully after speaking with legal counsel.”

Training Imperative

A CPL without ongoing training is a liability.
Get scenario-based drills.
Get medical training.
